Dada support

To the editor:
Where does the Journal-World get off opining as it did on Dec. 27 how the mayor's proclamation of International Dadaism Month "seems to cross the line into foolishness ... is disrespectful to the city's entire proclamation process," and then go on to suggest, "the time could be better spent"? Isn't Lawrence the "City of the Arts"? Would there be such a negative attack if the mayor proclaimed an "International Impressionism Month"?
Dadaism is not just an early 20th century movement. Dadaist artists are currently producing thought-provoking works all over the world, including right here in town. Last summer our own Spencer Museum of Art put on a show of surrealist drawings; much surrealist art grew out of Dadaism. So what's so wrong with the governing body of the City of the Arts celebrating an art movement?
Perhaps the Journal-World editorial staff should run a check on some of its own stories and uses of time. Every night, the World Co.-owned Sunflower 6News includes at least three discussions of the local weather in a half hour.
Foolishness? Time better spent? Sheesh!
Honestly, though, I shouldn't be so harsh on the Journal-World, because without it there would be less fuel to feed the local Dadaist engine.
Charles Goff III,
Lawrence

Higgledy piggledy! Life is only the sum of all equivilent exhanges of intricate nonsensical behavior over the bewilderment of those who refuse to follow the advice of those that follow the path of bestial livelyhood.
And if not, see if I don't let you understand the hidden meaning of the oligarchy that resides within our soul, and it's rastafarian influence of the budda of society as it converts to Christianity. Then, and only then can we come together as a single, unified entity of understanding towards one's overzealousness and evangelical appeal of confusion. But only if you wipe it first.
Ghastly or not is the dignitary opinion of this and only this visage's unappealing rightous indignation, and it's effect on the global conspiracy of reality, and it's overpowering aromatic stench of realistic endeavors.
But no matter what, the blue ones always ride for free.

How truly blessed all our lives must be when support or opposition of this “movement” rises to the top of our concerns. When so many in this world are simply trying to survive and protect their families, we have the honor of sitting in our climate controlled homes in the safest nation on the planet and debating this issue via technology that is unavailable to much of the world.
You want real nonsense? Look around you. Reality is filled with it. If you must turn to Dadaism for nonsense, you're not paying attention.

I believe one of the points of Dadaism is that most of what we consider “reality” is nonsense.

International Dadaism Month? Boog, please. Time for voters to rethink whether they want the Progressive Lawrence crew running the ship.

Anyone in the know would know that dadaism has been superceded by synaesthesia. So much for cutting edge Lawrence - Art has finally reached irrelevance and the City of the Arts didn't even hold so much as a tea party.
Might I suggest that the mayor's proclamations are better viewed less as government in action and more as very (very!) bad art.

It is better publicity than Kansas' backward anti-intellectualism.
After watching the CBS Sunday Morning piece about Lawrence on tax day, with the clogging and the road-kill stew, the town's behavior won't need to change that much. Just putting a label on what already happens.
It also seems to be in line with Lawrence's propensity for parades.
A Dada parade might be great fun.

I would be interested in knowing what yourworstnightmare means by “Kansas' backward anti-intellectualism”?
