Library site

To the editor:

Let’s relocate the new library and sell it to help pay for a new location.

Why? Because:

¢ It’s the most practical approach.

¢ It avoids the expense of relocating the senior center and fire department.

¢ Placing it at Ninth and New Hampshire streets makes the library an ideal companion to the Lawrence Arts Center.

¢ It avoids the inconvenience created during construction activity.

¢ It avoids the cost of rent should the library need to move during construction.

¢ The current location is not large enough, no matter which scenario is chosen.

¢ Expanding the parking garage at Ninth and New Hampshire provides enough parking for both the arts center and the library and generally increases the use of this parking garage.

¢ It would likely not increase cost of construction as retrofitting is expensive.

¢ The city could expand offices to the former library.

¢ A two- or three-story building would be a nice fit with existing new structures.

¢ It’s convenient to parents and children who need a place to go during classes or rehearsal breaks at the arts center.

¢ USD 497 could use the old library space for a portion of their vo-tech system like the world of computers.

¢ The old library could be a perfect fit for a bank or a health clinic.

¢ There is a primary public transportation hub at that intersection as well as cafes and coffee shops.

The vacant lots at Ninth and New Hampshire location are seeking excellent use.
