Rational thought

To the editor:

As an atheist, I watch the current situation in Kansas with horror. The betterment of the human condition is being slowed by those that resist the tenets of scientific knowledge and rational thought.

Instead, fundamentalists replace these tenets with supernatural explanations and faith, as if these ideas carry equal force in their arguments. It’s obvious to see that they don’t. I beseech any fundamentalist to ask themselves why a perfect creator would put nipples on a male animal? Why do humans have appendixes? What is the point of adenoids in humans? While the scientific community has a coherent, cohesive argument – evolution – fundamentalists use arguments such as “God’s will” or what basically amounts to “magic” as an explanation.

In our modern days of neuroscience and nuclear warfare it seems irresponsible for anyone, especially the leader of a world power, to make decisions citing the supernatural or 1,500-plus-year-old texts. What is even worse is that some people want this thought process to be taught to children; it really is the height of arrogance.

I’m calling on all people who reside in the darkness of irrational belief. We need you and your children’s cooperation, we need you to step out into the world that is the enlightened human mind, and we need you to be responsible toward your fellow human beings and your Mother Earth.
