EPA issues list of impaired waters

? The Environmental Protection Agency on Thursday approved the state’s 2004 list of impaired waters.

The list includes the Kansas and lower Republican rivers and streams and lakes in the river basins. Sites listed with at least one impairment include the Kansas River at Lecompton, Kill Creek, Perry Lake and the Douglas County State Fishing Lake and others, according to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.

The 1972 Clean Water Act requires states to develop the lists every two years. For waters on the list, the state must address the impairments by calculating the maximum amount of pollutant that the water can receive and still meet water quality standards.

The EPA approved 1,639 segments on the 2004 list in Kansas that the KDHE must address.
