Hypnosis helps players get into the pre-bowl spirit

? He may not get on the field for the Fort Worth Bowl on Friday. But Micah Brown, a seldom-used wide receiver for Kansas University, sure did steal the show on Tuesday.

During a team welcome reception at Billy Bob’s Texas, dubbed “The World’s Largest Honky Tonk,” entertainment was provided in the form of a hypnotist, who took a few Houston players and Brown and pretty much made fools out of them.

Most of the acts were harmless – Brown pretending to be a Santa Claus drill sergeant, Brown having to be a human seat belt for a Houston player, Brown falling so deeply asleep that he fell off his chair – but the freshman and former track athlete from Kearney, Neb., had his KU teammates in stitches when he was ordered to imitate a pregame speech by coach Mark Mangino.

He did so – right down to Mangino’s strut.

“We’re going to play four quarters,” Brown said in his best Mangino-like voice, “and go out and show them what Jayhawk football is.”

The whole Kansas section, including the coach himself, seemed to enjoy the good-natured fun, which wrapped up a night of entertainment and eating at Billy Bob’s. The gigantic country/western hot spot in the Fort Worth stockyard district gave Kansas players lots of options for entertainment, including billiards, video games and arcades.

The night went smooth except for a minor bump, when Kansas and Houston players started jawing at one another as they were finding seats for the entertainment. Nothing physical came of it, and a row of tables in the middle remained empty to keep the teams apart.

“Remember,” emcee Scott Murray said after order was restored, “that the game’s on Friday.”

Until then, the extracurricular activities will continue. Today, a few players will visit Cook Children’s Medical Center before a scheduled team dinner. The Jayhawks also plan to make an appearance at Thursday’s pep rally at Sundance Square in downtown Fort Worth before Friday’s kickoff at 7 p.m. from Amon G. Carter Stadium on the Texas Christian University campus.
