A northwestern Douglas County road will be closed next week because of construction work on the Kansas Turnpike.

East 500 Road, about five miles west of Lawrence, will be closed today in the area of the turnpike while a bridge is removed.

The road should reopen sometime Friday, said Keith Browning, Douglas County public works director.

The bridge removal is part of the ongoing turnpike widening project.
