Lawrence police on Thursday searched for an elderly white-bearded man suspected of hopping a counter and robbing the US Bank at 1807 W. 23rd St.

Officers were called to the bank at 3:52 p.m., said Sgt. Dan Ward, and quickly searched the surrounding area.

Ward said the suspect displayed no weapons during the crime, then fled east from the bank toward the Hobby Lobby store.

Police closed the bank and surrounded it with yellow tape while officers interviewed bank clerks and a few customers inside. Investigators reviewed security camera footage, and police released a photo of the suspect.

Ward described the suspect as a white male of an undetermined age. He was about 5 feet 10 inches tall with a slender build and wore a faded blue denim jacket, blue jeans and a tan baseball cap with a dark bill.

Police told dispatchers later that the suspect may have left the scene near the bank in a gold or bronze small or midsize car with damage to the right front fender.

Anyone with information regarding the robbery should call 843-TIPS, an anonymous tip line.
