My comments in the story about the custody battle involving the son of Marine Cpl. Levi Bradley (Journal-World, Dec. 12) didn’t accurately reflect the commitment of my boss, Congressman Dennis Moore, to the men and women bravely serving our country.

Our office worked closely with the Marine’s mother, Starleen Bradley, and her attorney to provide information on the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act. Moore stands behind this act designed to protect military personnel in war zones from civil lawsuits until they return home. We contacted the Marine Corps legal assistance office and were told the act should apply to Cpl. Bradley. As stated in the story, our office cannot provide legal advice. We can, however, serve as a valuable resource when it comes to assisting with military service problems.

Moore also has led efforts in Congress to help military personnel and their families. When he learned those on leave from Iraq and Afghanistan were forced to pay their travel costs to their home cities, he wrote a bill to direct the Department of Defense to pay all travel costs. It’s now the law. Moore also wrote a bill to increase the death gratuity for the families of military personnel killed on active duty from $12,000 to $100,000. It’s now law.

I’m proud of the excellent constituent services provided by our office and regret my comments didn’t reflect the high standards by which we operate. Moore will continue to support the Bradleys and honor all military personnel for their sacrifices.
