Probe widens into illegal human tissue harvesting

? A body unearthed last week from historic Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn as part of a probe into illegal tissue harvesting at area funeral homes appears to have had organs removed before burial, a law enforcement source familiar with the case said.

The exhumation of the remains at Green-Wood was the third dig carried out as part of a widening probe into allegations that funeral homes and biomedical facilities took tissue and organs from corpses without proper authorization.

No charges had been filed in the case, but a grand jury could act in early 2006, said the source, who asked not to be identified. The first exhumation took place last month at Maple Grove Cemetery in Queens. On Monday, investigators were carrying out the third disinterment, but the source wasn’t able to identify the cemetery affected.
