WSU challenge

To the editor:

As a Wichitan and a Wichita State graduate I applaud the efforts and accomplishments over the last several years of the Shocker men’s basketball team. It is my opinion, that under the stewardship of Mark Turgeon, the Shockers have brought respectability, if not fear, from many of the so-called “major programs” for this accomplishment. Yes, I acknowledge and accept the fact that Mr. Turgeon is a Kansas University graduate. However, from the moment that he took over our program, he became a “Shocker through and through.”

Yet, one fact still gripes me, and I believe I speak for many Wichita State fans when I say, why are the Kansas Jayhawks so afraid to play us? When I speak on this subject with the many KU supporters, I have heard every excuse you could think of to avoid what I believe is the real truth: We might just beat them.

Personally, I can think of no other reason why the Jayhawks continue to avoid such an occurrence from happening. I guess the real question that needs to be asked of KU basketball is whether you want to be referred to as the “Jayhawks” or the “Chickens?” My guess is the latter.
