Slow start for city

Free State boys, girls fall, LHS boys prevail in openers

Chilly Friday night turned frigid inside Free State High’s gym.

There, the Firebirds’ boys and girls basketball squads couldn’t seem to score, and each lost its season-opening game to Washburn Rural.

The FSHS boys scored just three points in the first quarter and fell, 51-39; Free State’s girls made just one of 15 second-half shots in a 38-33 loss to the Junior Blues.

It wasn’t all bad, though, as Lawrence High’s boys squad got off to a good start with a 54-47 victory over Kansas City Wyandotte in the Lions’ season-opener at LHS.

The LHS girls will kick off their season at 3 p.m. today with a game at Kansas City Christian.

Also Friday, Veritas Christian’s boys and girls each won at the Shea Tournament in Manhattan. The Eagles boys beat Derby Christian, 54-49, and the Veritas girls shut down Topeka Cornerstone, 39-20.

Seabury Academy wasn’t as successful. The Seahawk boys and girls each fell to Williamsburg – 48-20 and 35-27.
