Team leadership
To the editor:
In athletics, all teams at all levels must overcome adversity. Injuries, tough losses and the valleys that accompany any sports season are commonplace. In these situations, it is the coaches that make the difference. Leadership from a strong coaching staff helps players battle through the tough spots so they are prepared to succeed again, whether this means anticipating inevitable injuries and practicing with these changes in mind or lifting a team emotionally when they need the added boost. These are the qualities of a strong coach.
As I have watched the Kansas University volleyball program this year, I have seen a situation that calls for the coaches to make just such a difference. The events of the last two months, with players injured and several tough losses, has presented a golden opportunity for Coach Ray Bechard to be this kind of leader. Whether he is or not will be determined by the performance of his team in the tough situations.
