Topeka-based Payless ShoeSource Inc. said Thursday its same-store sales climbed 9 percent in November, topping the average analysts’ estimate of 2.2 percent, the company said Thursday.

Total sales were up 5.4 percent, to $207.6 million, compared with $196.9 million a year ago.

“November results exceeded our expectations, driven by favorable customer response to our merchandise and marketing efforts during the month,” said Matt Rubel, president and chief executive, in a statement.

Year-to-date same-store sales are up 3 percent, and total sales up 0.8 percent to $2.26 billion, compared with $2.25 billion a year ago.

Payless has a store in Lawrence at 3231 Iowa, above.

Payless shares gained 28 cents Thursday to close at $23.13.
