Commissioners seek tweak of mitigation plan

Douglas County commissioners Monday asked the Emergency Management Department to make minor changes to a plan needed for the county to receive federal and state emergency funding.

The purpose of the mitigation plan is to ensure the county would be able to get federal funding in case of a disaster such as a tornado, flood, hurricane or even a terrorist attack.

Mitigation plans address natural hazards a community may be susceptible to and potential ways of dealing with and making residents aware of the hazards.

Much of the plan discussed by commissioners involved area floodplains and the potential for flooding in the area.

County officials also must show state and Federal Emergency Management Agency officials that progress is being made on actions proposed to deal with potential hazards, said Douglas County Emergency Management Director Paula Phillips.

The commission needs to sign off on the plan by end of September, Phillips said.
