To the editor:
For a newspaper that prides itself on local and regional coverage, you really dropped the ball in your coverage (or lack of it) on the death of Harold Ensley. Harold Ensley was an outstanding and well-known Kansan. He pioneered television media coverage of the outdoor world, starting the very first fishing show on TV in prime time, and he became a beloved household name all over the Midwest.
I bet there aren't many Midwesterners 35 and older who don't remember Harold Ensley's "Gone Fishin'" theme song, even if they never watched a show. I deserve better from our local paper.

Agreed.
When I was a kid, "The Sportman's Friend" with Harold Ensley fought a long battle with that other enterprising (and entertaining) midwesterner - Walt Disney - for television viewing on those nights that afternoon sports coverage did damage to the evening's broadcast lineup (note for the kids: in 'olden' times, families usually had only one television set). Walt Disney usually won but that doesn't mean that I didn't hear "Gone Fishin'" playing in my head when I heard the report of Ensley's death.

I met Mr. Ensley at WalMart several years ago when they were selling a rod and reel combo that he was endorsing. He was a real gentleman. I watched his show every Sunday when it was on the air. "If anybody asked you where ol' Harold went, tell them you saw him headin' out in his Ford Country Sedan wagon, and he'd 'gone fishin'.
