Charge dropped against vet who spit on Fonda

? A Vietnam veteran who spit tobacco juice in actress Jane Fonda’s face had his case dismissed Thursday by a municipal judge.

Michael Dean Smith, 54, of Gladstone, had been charged with one misdemeanor count of disorderly conduct.

The ex-Marine spit on Fonda during a book-signing April 19 in Kansas City, saying he was angry for anti-war activities that included a 1972 visit to North Vietnam.

Smith said Thursday he had planned to plead guilty, even though Fonda said the day after the incident that she did not want to press charges. He was charged anyway because an off-duty police officer saw him spit on the actress.
