It was war

To the editor:

Is it possible to be too politically correct? Yes. Want an example? OK. In Thursday’s paper there was an article about commemorating Quantrill’s visit to Lawrence during the period of the border dispute by a battle (can I say “battle”?) of the bands. When houses are burned and people are killed and terrorized, it’s not a dispute. It’s a war.

Even Chuck Woodling has tried to draw a distinction between “Jayhawks” (happy, friendly birdies) and Jayhawkers (vicious, violent border warriors – or should I say disputers). Based on the Kansas University Athletic Department’s recent conduct toward long-time season ticketholders, some major boosters and anyone with a nonlicensed KU logo, I would say the connection is closer than Chuck thinks it is.
