Area restaurants receive fines

Eight Lawrence restaurants and one in Tonganoxie received fines from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, according to a report released Friday.

The area establishments listed as fined were Thai House Restaurant, 724 Mass.; Milton’s, 920 Mass.; Ixtapa, 2016 W. 23rd St., Suite B; El Mezcal II, 804 Iowa; Lawrence Country Club Dining Room, 400 Country Club Terrace; Salty Iguana III, 4931 W. Sixth St.; Zen Zero, 811 Mass.; Royal Crest Lanes-Chubby’s, 933 Iowa; and Fourth Street Cafe, 400 E. Fourth St. in Tonganoxie.

All received either a $1,000, $1,250 or $1,500 fine for a variety of reasons, according to the KDHE’s orders. The most common violations occurred when inspectors documented seeing employees not wash their hands during food preparation; finding improper foods stored together; and foods being kept at the wrong temperatures.

According to the KHDE’s Friday statement and the orders, the restaurants were cited Monday. By law, they have 20 days to appeal the fines.
