To the editor:
In response to Ron Stegall's Aug. 16 "Overreaction" letter, I hope your family did indeed learn an important lesson: Dogs should never be locked in cars on hot days. What may feel comfortable to you is NOT comfortable to them. How quickly people forget that dogs have fur coats!
I think it is sad though, that your family was yelled at. There was no excuse for that. However, there is no excuse for anyone to leave an animal in a car in the heat where temperatures rapidly climb to dangerous levels.
And as someone who participated in getting the tethering ordinance you referred to passed, I can assure you the ordinance was sorely needed. You just ask members of our shelter who have seen dogs hung, children bitten and dogs starved to death or frozen to death, all from being tethered 24-7. Or how about the pit bulls being trained to fight in our community that become increasingly aggressive from being chained with huge log chains 24-7?
Instead of telling people who look out for the safety and welfare of pets they are "seriously out of proportion" I would suggest educating yourself on why the two ordinances you referred to were passed in the first place.
When you're a responsible pet guardian, these two ordinances should not affect you and make perfect sense. They will, however, affect people who "love" their pets but just don't think, and for the people who just don't care about their pet's safety, welfare and happiness.
