Jan Pence, left, and longtime friend Debbie Warber look through some of the handbags and broaches Pence made for the Lawrence Art market sale Saturday.
Several friends of Jan Pence will be manning a booth from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at today's Lawrence Art Market, 402 N. Second St., to raise money for Pence's mid-September trip to Switzerland, where she will undergo treatment for cancer. The treatment is not yet available in the U.S.
The group will be selling Pence-designed brooches and handbags. The trip and treatment are expected to cost about $10,000. The treatment is not covered by Medicare.
Pence, 69, used to own Pence's Garden Supply with her ex-husband, Fred. She now lives on Social Security.
"We - there are about 10 of us - just wanted to do something to help," said Debbie Warber, who organized the booth. "She doesn't deserve this (cancer)."
Contributions also may be sent to Jan Pence Medical Fund, c/o Douglas Co. State Bank, 300 W. Ninth St., Lawrence 66044.
