A giant cardboard hot dog on wheels, along with an ice cream sundae followed a 10-foot-tall SpongeBob SquarePants replica through downtown Lawrence on Thursday evening.

The brief parade down Massachusetts from Seventh Street to South Park provided a glimpse of some participants in Saturday's Chamber Leadership Lake Challenge.

The annual event is a fundraiser for the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce's Leadership Lawrence program.

The teams pay an entry fee and design vessels out of cardboard strips and other materials that - one hopes - will float.

This Saturday could be about redemption for a team that finished second a year ago. But to get there, the Haase & Long team - designers of The Salty Dog boat - will travel in a favorite ballpark snack.

"We chose a hot dog because it looks like a boat," said Devon Kim, of Haase & Long. "We are cautiously optimistic. We expect to win Best Costume, though."

Most participants said they were in it mostly for fun.

"We're winging it; we hope it floats," said Bob Gent, who, along with Steve Dowell, constructed The Scourge of the High "C's" for the Lawrence Children's Choir.

The boating action will begin with kids' activities at 9 a.m. Saturday at Clinton Lake Marina. Racing begins at 11:30 a.m. Organizer Kevin Boatright said 36 boats have entered for Saturday.
