To the editor:
In response to Paul J. Elliott's letter of Aug. 14., I, too, wonder if the City Commission cares about us.
Yes, they care somewhat because we get patchup jobs. For example, some streets in North Lawrence were trickled with some kind of tar, which made our streets look hideous. They didn't cover the cracks, or maybe it's supposed to do something to the cracks, like putting nail polish on a run in your stockings. But what do I know about repairing streets?
We need a grocery store, Walgreens, Wal-Mart, Dollar stores and other stores to make it easier for us senior citizens to go shopping for our needs. And better still, they could be in walking distance.
Why does it have to be an outsider to take notice of the things we need? For one, it is true that the streets are narrow because I walk with a friend every day during the week. And yes, we have to be very careful. My friend gets so mad because cars and trucks just zoom on by; they don't care. And, since all blocks don't have sidewalks in North Lawrence, we do have to watch where we walk.
In southwest Lawrence, for example, they have nice bike trails. Why is that? I don't understand.
One thing I do understand is that North Lawrence is last on the totem pole.
Tell us what we need to do to get more things done in North Lawrence.
Mary Nunez,
Lawrence

If people in North Lawrence want new streets and sidewalks they will have to pay as a benefit district. If they think people drive fast now put in new streets and see what happens with all the new growth. All residents may not want to pay for such luxuries.
