Nonprofit group offers proceeds from cans

A new nonprofit organization, Cans for the Community, made its first donation of $500 Friday to the Douglas County Visiting Nurses Assn.

The group has placed a new collection bin for donations at Checkers Foods grocery store at 23rd and Louisiana streets.

The group plans to donate funds generated by recycling aluminum cans to a different area charity each month.

Cans for the Community has an existing collection site at the Immanuel Lutheran Church parking lot at 15th and Iowa streets. Businesses can call 832-9671 to request can collection on a regular basis or send them to Bargain Center at 12th Street and Haskell Avenue and request the proceeds benefit the group.
