To the editor:

I visited Lawrence and KU recently. I first went to the Visitor’s Center and walked around the neighborhood in North Lawrence. I was disappointed at the narrow, unimproved streets nearby, with cars parked in yards and ditches. I was nearly hit and run over by a tow truck as well. Needless to say, my first impression of Lawrence was discouraging, to say the least. But fortunately I found other areas of the city, especially around campus, were much nicer, as expected.

I can only wonder why the residents across the Kansas River and the railroad tracks have to endure such bad conditions in their neighborhood. Does anyone on the City Commission care about them, too, especially when I read about the money thrown at putting up speed bumps across town? What’s going on in Lawrence anyway?
