Douglas County commissioners have passed along a request to lift a minimum road maintenance designation to the Lawrence-Douglas County Planning Commission.

East 1400 Road has existed for years on the county rolls and is located between North 650 and 700 roads and near North 650 and East 1375 roads.

Mike Flory, an area property owner and developer, has requested the minimum maintenance designation be lifted. He intends to use the road as the only access point into a residential development located in the area.

On Wednesday, Douglas County commissioners approved sending Flory's request to the Lawrence-Douglas County Planning Commission for a recommendation. The vote was 2-1 with Commission Chairman Charles Jones dissenting.

Jones said he couldn't support the request to lift the road maintenance designation because it would allow for the creation of subdivisions on five acres of land. He also didn't like that there would be only one access point into the residential development.
