Newspaper, family honored as friend of fair

The Journal-World and the Simons family of Lawrence were presented the 2005 Friend of the Fair Award at closing ceremonies of the Douglas County Fair at the Community Building at the fairgrounds.

Paul Gabriel of the fair board made the presentation and noted that the silver engraved platter signified the many years of enthusiastic involvement, promotion and support of the fair.

The award was accepted for the Journal-World by Bill Mayer, contributing editor and a 55-year member of the newspaper’s staff. Dolph C. Simons Jr., World Company chairman, and other members of the family were out of town because of a previously scheduled engagement and were unable to attend.

Gabriel cited the long commitment and assistance of the Journal-World and the Simonses for 4-H, FFA, county fair and Extension Service programs.

The newspaper’s association with rural programs began in 1891 when the late W.C. Simons funded the Lawrence Daily World (later to become the Journal-World).
