Memorable visit

To the editor:

The “Kauai Kine” Girls 16 and Under Softball team was fortunate enough to be invited to the 2005 AFA B Nationals in Lawrence held July 18 to 24. Coming from the Hawaiian Islands, we did not know what to expect.

Well, we did not meet one person from Kansas who did not greet us with the utmost respect. When we arrived at the Hampton Inn, we were welcomed with friendly smiles and a great staff. At the front desk, we had a message to call Bill Finucane from the local Phenix 14 and Under softball team. Come to find out they had a “welcoming” meal prepared for us by the team and their parents along with other “goodies” from local merchants. After an interview with the local 6News television reporter, we started to feel like royalty.

The other part was the fields and facilities. Your parks and recreation department have a lot to be proud of, as these were some of the best playing fields we have ever seen. The teams were all friendly, both on the field and off.

Our stay was made more enjoyable by the citizens of Lawrence, who adopted us and knew who we were wherever we went. The families back in Hawaii enjoyed the article in your paper, as they were able to read it on the Internet. So, as you can see, our trip to Lawrence was a memorable one. Our entire team and parents back here in Hawaii would like to say a big “Mahalo” (thank you) to all mentioned above and the entire community. We look forward to visiting again sometime. Aloha.

Mike Koerte,

Kauai Kine coach
