Bill and Kathi Fair, of Bill Fair and Co. in Lecompton, attended the National Auctioneers Assn. convention in Pittsburgh. The convention included lectures and study sessions on topics from integration of online bidding to the latest techniques in real estate title transfer.

More than 2,000 auctioneers from the U.S., Canada, England and South Africa were present for the weeklong meeting.

¢ Keiv Spare, Jennifer Black, Travis Haney and Tiffany Ruse have joined Lawrence-based Landplan Engineering.

Spare, an engineer I, provides support for stormwater collection/detention, wastewater collection, water distribution and street projects for municipal, commercial and residential clients. His projects include the Salvation Army site in Lawrence and west Lawrence residential developments. Spare is a 2005 graduate of Kansas University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering.

Black also is an engineer I. Her projects include High Point Downs subdivision in Basehor and a residential subdivision in Wellsville. She received a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering from Iowa State University in 2005.

Haney brings four years of experience to his position as an engineering technician. He is responsible for design and drafting and preparation of construction documents for parks and recreation and site planning projects. His projects include Sunset Ridge in Wellsville, Northgate subdivision in Lawrence and Lawrence public schools.

As invoicing clerk, Ruse is responsible for all aspects of the billing cycle. She has three years of financial experience and received an Executive Assistant Certificate from Pinnacle Career Institute.

¢ Ronda Benning has been promoted to assistant store manager at Dillons, 4701 W. Sixth. She has been with the company since 1995. She most recently was customer service manager at a Topeka store.

¢ Lawrence resident Megan Moffett has joined Lawrence-based Prosoco as assistant office manager. Moffett operates the company's telephone switchboard, distributes and processes incoming and outgoing mail, and serves as receptionist.

She is a senior at Kansas University, where she is majoring in English, film and theater. Before joining Prosoco, Moffett served as a customer service representative for First American Title Insurance Co. in Overland Park.

¢ Ranu Pal, Lawrence, recently opened Internet-based Indianessence at www.indianessence.com. The company has exclusive fashion materials that are personally hand-picked from India. The list includes Indian silk sarees, fashion jewelry, bindis, bangles of different colors, designs and qualities and music CDs. The Web site was designed by Pal's daughter, Arundhati Pal.

The handmade scarves and open ponchos were designed and knitted by Ranu Pal.

¢ Dr. Chris Leiszler has joined the dental practice of Dr. Jim Otten, Lawrence. Leiszler received a Bachelor of Arts in human biology in 2001 from Kansas University. Leiszler served as president of the KU Pre-Dental Club.

Leiszler graduated from the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Dentistry in 2005 and received the American Equilibration Society Achievement Award for outstanding performance in the science of occlusion and temporomandibular joint function. While in dental school, Leiszler also served as president of the American Student Dental Assn.

Leiszler has begun pursuing post-graduate level advanced dental education by attending the first of a series of courses at the Dawson Center for Advanced Dental Study in St. Petersburg, Fla.

¢ Chelly Belzer Sumner, hair stylist, is moving to Designers Salon & Day Spa, 2108 W. 27th St., starting Monday. Sumner has been a senior stylist at JC Penney Salon for the past six years and was at A Cut Above for three years.

¢ Cheryl Travis and John Wulf were recognized by the U.S. Postal Service for their years of service. Travis, a rural Lawrence mail carrier, received a 25-year Service Award Pin. Wulf, a city letter carrier, earned a 30-year Service Award Pin.

¢ Jayhawk Area Agency on Aging Inc. recognized Marsha Ridinger for 25 years of service. Ridinger has been program manager, specializing in nutrition programs, since 1986. She recently was appointed to oversee the fiscal department as well. The agency advocates aging issues, builds community partnerships and implements programs within Shawnee, Jefferson and Douglas counties.

¢ Kenneth Click, of ProSpection of Lawrence/Topeka, recently passed the Texas Real Estate Commission test to become a licensed professional inspector. Before testing, applicants must have completed 438 hours of classroom education focused on foundations, framing, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, roofing and other components of residential construction. Click has more than 15 years of construction experience.

¢ Marc Ridenour and Joe Robinson, of Natural Breeze Remodeling Inc., 1440 Wakarusa Drive, Suite 800, have completed training to become certified silestone, granite and other "stone" countertop installers in Lawrence.

¢ Ogden Publications, Topeka, has launched Motorcycle Classics, a magazine "dedicated to the greatest motorcycles of all time and the people who ride them." The magazine is scheduled for publication six times a year.

Richard Backus is the magazine's editor-in-chief. Ric Anderson, a Lawrence resident, is associate editor.

Honors and awards

Lawrence-based Prosoco Inc.'s quarterly newsletter, Prosoco News, garnered a "Magnum Opus" award for best feature article in a custom publishing competition that included entries from other major corporations, design firms and universities.

The annual contest is sponsored by McMurry Publishing Co.'s Publications Management newsletter, in cooperation with the University of Missouri School of Journalism. Prosoco News captured an "Honorable Mention" in the "Best Feature Article" category for its story, "All that glitters is not steel."

The story, which appeared in the Winter 2004 issue of Prosoco News, covered the rise in the use of Prosoco products on travertine at the recently completed Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles.

The 2005 contest's nearly 600 other entries included publications from Walt Disney Co., Hearst Custom Publishing and Princeton University.

Prosoco News' mission is to educate, inform and entertain its audience concerning the use of Prosoco products as they relate to construction industry best practices. The audience includes about 18,000 architects, contractors, distributors and trade media representatives nationwide.

Lawrence resident Gary Henry is the newsletter's writer and editor. Chris Millspaugh, also of Lawrence, is graphic designer.

Located in East Hills Business Park, Prosoco is a national manufacturer of products that clean, protect and maintain concrete, brick and stone.

¢ Beth Kinnan and Jessica Claas were named Employee of the Month for June and July by Jayhawk Area Agency on Aging Inc. Kinnan is a case manager who is responsible for providing assessments and coordinating services for her senior clients. Claas is a client assessment referral evaluation coordinator. She provides technical assistance to all CARE assessors in Shawnee, Jefferson and Douglas counties.

¢ Mark Hirschey, professor of finance at Kansas University School of Business, has been named the inaugural recipient of the Anderson Chandler Professorship in Business.

Hirschey, who joined KU in 1988, is the author of more than 85 academic research articles and scholarly textbooks. He has an international reputation for his research accomplishments and has earned awards for his research. He is founding president of the Association of Financial Economists and co-editor of Advances in Financial Economics, a scholarly research series.

Anderson Chandler, Topeka, serves on the board of advisers for the KU School of Business and on the KU Endowment board of trustees. In 1996, he established the Anderson Chandler Lecture Series for the school. The series brings nationally and internationally known speakers to KU for public lectures, classroom appearances and interaction with students.

Chandler, chairman of the Topeka-based Fidelity State Bank and Trust Co., established the professorship with a $500,000 gift to the School of Business through the Kansas University Endowment Association. The interest earned on the endowed fund supports a salary stipend and professional development for the recipient.

The Nationals award program recognizes superior new home sales and marketing achievements. During a three-day judging process, a panel of industry professionals from across the country selects Silver and Gold award winners from a field that typically includes more than 1,200 entries.

¢ Jefferson County producers who suffered crop losses from damaging weather in 2003 or 2004 have until Sept. 9 to sign up for benefits under the Farm Service Agency's Crop Disaster Program.

To meet the deadline requirements, producers must submit a completed form CCC-750, Crop Disaster Program Application, and all supporting documentation by Sept. 9. Producers suffering a greater than 35 percent production loss or more than a 20 percent quality loss are eligible.

The payment rate for the crop disaster program is 65 percent of the established commodity price for insured crops and noninsured crops and 60 percent of the price for uninsured commodities.

¢ Bill Fuller, state executive director of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Kansas Farm Service Agency, announces that there is a simplified form for the Loan Deficiency Payment program.

"In the past, many producers have failed to submit an LDP request before beneficial interest was lost in the commodity which made them ineligible for benefits," Fuller said. "The new form CCC-633EZ, Page 1, when filed before loss of beneficial interest, allows producers to indicate their intention to receive LDP benefits."

The CCC-633EZ is available online at http://forms.sc.egov.usda.gov/eforms/mainservlet.
