To the editor:

Interesting. It's against some city ordinance to go Dumpster diving but when I called the police department to complain/inform of people checking trash barrels for personal information, i.e. "you're pre-approved," etc., notices and other personal information in my old area, I was told that since it was "in the trash" it's fair game and nothing was done.

Which is it folks?

Shred it. Go buy a shredder. Someone could get your ID at the dump as well. The wind may carry it as well.

This is true. If there is any information that you don't want falling into the hands of somebody else, you need to make sure it is completely defaced and destroyed. New York has had problems with people so desperate, they are piecing together shredded papers into thier original forms to steal identifying information. So make sure to mix your shreds thouroughly.

As for the police, they only enforce what they want to enforce. And that varies from person to person. I bet if you were a multi-millionaire, then they would be out there in a heartbeat.
