A 30-year-old Lawrence man crashed his pickup truck early Wednesday on West Ninth Street while trying to flee law enforcement officials after a fight at The Pool Room, 925 Iowa, police said.
The incident happened shortly after 1 a.m. Police said the man, identified as Steven J. Bergeson, pushed a 36-year-old woman to the ground after she tried to intervene in a domestic dispute, then got in his truck and started driving west on Ninth Street. When officers tried to stop him, he drove around two construction barricades on Ninth Street, struck a power pole and fire hydrant, got out of his truck and tried to run away on foot, said Sgt. Dan Ward, a police spokesman.
He was arrested on suspicion of battery, attempting to elude police, leaving the scene of an accident and reckless driving.
