4 injured in Kansas Highway 10 wreck

SUV overturns west of Eudora

Two women and two children from Lawrence were injured Wednesday evening when their vehicle overturned several times on Kansas Highway 10 just west of Eudora, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.

The accident occurred about 5:30 p.m. in the eastbound lanes as traffic was slowing down to get around emergency vehicles at the scene of a grass fire along the south side of the highway, the patrol report said.

The driver, Havah Tamizi Jazaieri, 22, was taken by Life Star helicopter to Overland Park Regional Medical Center, where she was in the intensive care unit, a hospital official said.

The second woman, Hagar Tamizi Jazaieri, 25, was taken by LifeNet helicopter to St. Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City, Mo., where she was in fair condition, an official said.

The children, Rahseem Dowdell, 8, a boy, and Kammal A. Dowdell, 1, a girl, were taken by Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical ambulance to Lawrence Memorial Hospital. A nursing supervisor said they were treated and released.

Kansas Highway patrol Troopers work the scene of a one-vehicle wreck east of Lawrence about 5:15 p.m. Wednesday. Four people were transported to hospitals.

Firefighters were fighting the grass fire near the Church Street exit ramp sign and a Eudora Police car was blocking the driving lane for the fire department, the patrol report stated.

The victims were in an eastbound 1999 Toyota 4Runner sport utility vehicle traveling in the passing lane when it approached traffic near the grass fire. For some reason the driver took an evasive maneuver and traveled into the right lane. The driver then overcorrected causing the vehicle to overturn several times, finally stopping on its wheels along the south side of the highway.

Douglas County Sheriff’s officers and Lawrence Police assisted the Highway Patrol at the scene. Officers blocked the eastbound lanes of the highway and diverted traffic onto East 1900 Road. Nevertheless, eastbound traffic was backed up for a few miles during rush hour. The highway was reopened shortly after 7 p.m.
