Police investigate stabbing at apartment

A woman was injured and a man was taken into custody following a stabbing incident Tuesday night at a south Lawrence apartment complex, Lawrence Police said.

The woman, whose identity wasn’t released, was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital by ambulance shortly after police responded to Colony Woods Apartments, 1301 W. 24th St., building C. Her condition wasn’t available late Tuesday.

Officers obtained a description of a man who was thought to be a suspect. He was spotted by a Douglas County Sheriff’s officer in the area of 22nd Street and Naismith Drive, where he was taken into custody, Police Sgt. Paul Fellers said.

The woman, who had been stabbed more than once, was thought to be a resident of the apartment building, Fellers said. She was found at the bottom of an outside stairway, he said. It was not known whether the suspect and the victim knew each other. Police remained at the scene investigating late Tuesday.

Yellow crime-scene tape and been placed around the stairway and along the north side of the building. No other details were available and more information was expected to be released today.

Some residents who live in buildings near the crime scene said it was unnerving to have such an incident occur so close to home.

“For the most part it’s been pretty quiet here,” said Jen Williams, who said she has lived at Colony Woods for more than a year.

Adam and Misty Stiller agreed.

“Management’s been pretty good to us,” Adam Stiller said.

Lori Parker, another nearby resident, said she could recall only one other incident since she moved there in January that had attracted a lot of police – a loud party.

Jacob Boyer stood outside with Parker talking to neighbors and watching police go about their investigation. He said he wasn’t bothered by the incident.

“No, I’m from Oklahoma City and this is pretty mild compared to what goes on there,” he said.
