To the editor;

This letter is in response to the article on July 30 in regard to Dumpster diving. The article lists various places to take unwanted items. One of the businesses listed is Goodwill. I am acquainted with persons who have been employed at Goodwill, and they have told me that, often, when they do not have time or simply get tired of going through donated articles, they will just toss items into the Dumpster. These include items donated by businesses that still have price tags attached to them. We're talking about new merchandise. Often expensive items are tossed into the trash bin.

If drop sites like these do not have time to sort through donated items, then I believe they are inviting people to explore their Dumpsters for free and good merchandise. By just donating an item, one is not assured that the item will end up in that store.

If someone throws items of good quality into the trash, wouldn't it be better for those needing those items to be able to rescue them and use them? The alternative of items going to the landfill seems to me much more wasteful than for one to be able to make good use of useable merchandise. Surely, the city of Lawrence can allow its citizens to rescue such merchandise and put it to good use.

Cheryl A. Mark,

Lawrence
