The commander of the Lawrence Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 852 has received special accolades from the national VFW commander.

Vernon W. Russell has achieved All American status as the Lawrence post commander, National Commander John Furgess recently announced. Russell is one of only 115 VFW post commanders worldwide to receive this recognition. It is considered one of the most prestigious honors given by the VFW.

The criteria for bestowing the honor on a commander is based on outstanding achievement in membership growth, Buddy Poppy sales and participation in other VFW programs that benefit veterans and their communities, Furgess said.
