Appearance made in sex crimes case

A Desoto man charged with sex crimes against a pair of young girls made his first court appearance Monday afternoon.

The 24-year-old man was arrested by Eudora Police on Friday. Prosecutors said that between December 2004 and April of this year, he had sex with one girl and fondled another. Both girls are 13.

He was charged with three counts of rape and one count of aggravated indecent liberties with a child.

The man was initially booked into Douglas County Jail with bonds of $50,000 and $15,000 on the rape and indecent liberties cases, respectively. At the request of prosecutors, Judge Stephen N. Six on Monday raised those amounts to $150,000 and $75,000.

“The state believes (the defendant) is a predator in every sense of the word,” said Assistant Dist. Atty. David Melton.

The man’s next hearing is Aug. 8. The Journal-World generally does not identify persons accused of sex crimes unless they have been convicted.
