Wet, ‘unbelievably chilly’ conditions hit Lawrence

The last of the April showers are falling today. But the cool weather that’s coming with it might keep you from singing in the rain.

“Weather wise, it’s not going to be a very nice day, ” says Tim Reith, 6News meteorologist. “We see the chance for off-and-on rain showers as we go through the day. I think most of the rainfall should be out of here by the mid-afternoon hours.”

At 8:30 a.m., the temperature was 43 degrees and winds were 8 mph from the north, making the wind chill 38 degrees.

“It feels like winter-time out there. Make sure you bundle up,” Reith said. “It is unbelievably chilly.”

Heavy cloud cover throughout the day won’t allow the temperature to rise very much, Reith said. Today’s high temperature will reach 50 by late afternoon, with northeast winds 10 to 15 mph. The average high is 72 for the day, the average low is 50.

“This isn’t the type of weather we expect at the end of April. This is what we expect at the end of March,” Reith said. “I think spring took a few days off.”

The temperature will take a dive overnight, falling into the 30s, dropping below the freezing mark to 31 degrees, he said. However, the National Weather Service says there probably isn’t a chance for frost because the winds will be 5 to 10 mph.

“We warm up nicely because we will have sunny skies,”Reith said. The temperature will warm up to a high of 60 by late Saturday afternoon, with winds northwesterly 8 to 15 mph.

Saturday night won’t be quite as cold as Friday night, but the temperature will drop to a low of 39 by early Sunday morning.

Sunday’s temperature will rise to a high of 63. Clouds will be moving in during the afternoon, bringing the possibility of some showers on Monday morning, Reith said.
