Free State solid in sweep of ONW

? A doubleheader against Olathe Northwest was just what Free State High’s girls softball team needed, as the Firebirds collected a two-game sweep of the Ravens, 12-5 and 7-5, Thursday.

In the opener, Free State struck early by scoring seven runs in the first inning and grabbing a 12-2 lead after 21/2 innings. Ashley Wagner, who also earned the victory on the mound, was 2-for-3 with four RBIs for Free State, and Jamie Stanclift, Brooke Abney and Aleese Kopf each had two hits in four at-bats.

Summer Mulford earned the victory in the nightcap after the Firebirds rallied for two runs in the seventh inning. Livi Abney was 3-for-3 for FSHS with a double and a triple.

Free State coach Pam Pine said the trip to Olathe Northwest came at the right time for her squad.

“I was looking for a win in those two games,” she said. “It was cold, and the girls did a good job responding with the bats.”

Pine also lauded the play of Livi Abney during the two games. She doubled in the opener.

“She had a real hot bat tonight,” Pine said. “She was swinging the bat really well.”

Free State (7-7) will travel Tuesday to Shawnee Mission South.
