LHS drops pair to Olathe East

For one game of Tuesday’s doubleheader against Olathe East, the Lawrence High softball team played like the best team in the state. In the other, they played like they were playing against the best team in the state.

They ended up losing both games — 1-0 and 13-2 — to state softball juggernaut Olathe East at Holcom Sports Complex.

The first game showed promise for the Lions as they kept the Hawks scoreless through six innings. The trouble for the Lions was they couldn’t get any runs to support a fine pitching performance by Whitney Juneau. LHS batters had to face Alex Hupp, who tallied 12 strikeouts.

Juneau held strong until the seventh inning with two outs and two strikes against Teddi Ewing, who took the next pitch over the left-field wall.

“To give up that home run, but she was the one who kept us in the game,” LHS coach Reenie Stogsdill said. “Teddi Ewing is a great hitter, and she got her pitch and drove it out of the park.”

But her only blemish sent the Lions to a defeat. They would go down in order in the bottom of the seventh inning to preserve Alex Hupp’s one-hit performance.

The struggles would continue on offense during the first game. Marla Metsker got aboard for the first hit with an infield single in the sixth inning. Samantha Hays pinch ran and reached second on a sacrifice bunt.

But the Lions couldn’t bring her home.

“We had an opportunity, we had a runner in scoring position,” Stogsdill said. “But we just had one opportunity to score, and we have to give ourselves more chances.”

The Lions couldn’t catch up with Hupp, and it got worse later in the game when they swung at some bad pitches, making Hupp’s task easier.

“We played them zero-all the entire game, and we wanted a hit really bad, so we were doing whatever we could,” Juneau said.

The second game was an easy task for the Hawks as they capitalized on miscues and spotty pitching from the Lions to put the game away early.

“The second game was totally different,” Stogsdill said. “They put the ball in play every time, and we had to step up and make some plays. We had a lot of ‘almost’ plays, and we needed to get it done.”

Some of those “almost” plays included several wild pitches and passed balls, as well as fielding errors on fly balls.

The Lions (5-7) will play host Thursday to Leavenworth.
