Qualifications

To the editor:

In Wednesday’s On The Street column, one respondent suggested that being a member of the Hitler Youth should disqualify one from becoming pope. The new pope was a member of the Hitler Youth at age 14 for a short period of time after it became compulsory. He applied for and received a dispensation because of his seminary studies and was allowed to withdraw. Certainly he did not want any part in this odious organization.

My question is: Should voluntary membership (as an adult) in the Ku Klux Klan disqualify a man from being a United States senator?
