Theft suspect crashes truck on bike trail

A man was arrested by Lawrence Police Sunday morning after allegedly taking a purse and then leading officers on a car and foot chase that ended with a crash on a bike trail.

The suspect, whose name wasn’t released, was booked into the Douglas County Jail pending formal charges.

The incident began about 8:30 a.m. when police received a report of a man stealing a purse at Dillons, 3000 W. Sixth St., said Police Capt. Ed Brunt. Moments later an officer stopped a pickup truck the suspect was driving at Peterson Road and Iowa Street.

The suspect then drove off, leading officers on a chase to the 2500 block of Winterbrook Drive. The driver drove onto a bike trail and ended up wrecking the truck in a ditch, Brunt said. He fled on foot and was caught shortly after by officers. Nobody was hurt in the incident, Brunt said.
