Horse-loving helpers needed at stables

Pathways Animal Assisted Therapy is an organization that enables adults and children with disabilities to enjoy the experience of therapeutic horseback riding. Volunteers who love horses are needed to assist in the program as side walkers and horse handlers in organized classes. A volunteer training session will take place from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at stables south of Lawrence.

Immediate volunteer needs

  • Lawrence Memorial Hospital has volunteer positions available. Gift shop and hospital escort volunteers are needed. Volunteers also are needed at LMH South, 23rd Street and Kasold Drive, in the GI Lab on Wednesday mornings. LMH South reception volunteers are needed Thursday mornings.
  • The Perry Lake Park needs individuals, groups or families who are interested in volunteering to maintain the Perry Trail, a 30-mile hiking trail. Volunteer duties can be anything from litter cleanup, painting blue trail blazes on trees, pruning with lopping shears, picking up downed branches, mowing, placing signs, bridge building, trail crossing construction and chain-sawing of larger downed trees. Interested individuals can volunteer a few hours a year or many days each month, based on their interest and availability.   • Brandon Woods Retirement Community needs volunteers to provide manicures for residents on Monday mornings. The volunteer does not need to be a professional manicurist and should instead be interested in spending some social time doing nails with the residents.   • The 37th Annual March of Dimes WalkAmerica fund-raising event will be at 6 p.m. May 13 at Clinton State Park. Volunteers are needed on the local Logistics Committee in advance of the event and to help on the day of WalkAmerica itself. The March of Dimes mission is the prevention of premature births, birth defects and infant mortality. Volunteer opportunities also are available year-round in the local chapter office.   • Headquarters Counseling Center needs volunteers to help with their bicycle ride Saturday. The Life Support Rally raises funds for free counseling and information services for kids and adults.
