Sagging sidewalks

To the editor:

Naismith Drive, the gateway to Kansas University! The east side of Naismith has no place to walk at all. The one sidewalk on the west side is narrow and crumbling, with sections jutting out and cracked with age. This condition is an insult to the quality of life to established neighborhoods along Naismith. Large numbers of students at KU are discouraged from walking to and from campus and frequenting the businesses on 23rd Street.

Having been a long-time resident of Lawrence’s established Centennial Neighborhood, I could never understand how this condition could continue. The areas of suburban sprawl have beautiful new wide sidewalks for walking and biking. Walking along Naismith continues to reflect poorly on how Lawrence is providing “quality of life” infrastructure for students and residents around KU.

It’s too bad James Naismith didn’t invent sidewalks in addition to basketball. I’ll bet at least we’d have them around the university.
