FSHS tennis triumphant; LHS falls

Free State won all three of its doubles matches and five of its six singles matches and rolled to a 8-1 boys tennis victory over Shawnee Mission West on a windy Thursday at Free State.

Senior Charles Guard set the tone with an 8-0 victory over Austin Brown at No. 1 singles, and Nick Martinez, Drew Schelar, Zack Morgenstern and Stephen Donly all followed with singles victories of their own.

Guard and Martinez, Jack Hull and Schelar, and Morganstern and Donly won their doubles matches convincingly.

FSHS will travel to Junction City on Saturday, the first of three straight Saturday tournaments.

Manhattan 9, LHS 0

The Lawrence High boys tennis team was overmatched Thursday at Lawrence Tennis Center, falling 9-0 to Manhattan.

“I can’t explain it on our part,” LHS coach Dick Wedel said. “On their part, this is the best Manhattan team I have seen.”

Lawrence will travel Tuesday to Topeka Seaman.
