A semitrailer carrying 40 cattle rolled over Wednesday morning on
U.S. Highway 56 near Baldwin Junction, sending the driver to the
hospital and killing 13 of the animals. It took the Kansas Highway
Patrol nearly nine hours to remove the cows from the trailer and
clear the scene, dispatchers said. The wreck happened at 5:47 a.m.
just west of Baldwin Junction when the driver, identified as
23-year-old Brandon C. King of Cannon Falls, Minn., left the road
for an unknown reason and went into a ditch. He was flown by air
ambulance to University of Kansas Hospital, Kansas City, Kan.,
according to a police report. His condition was not available
Wednesday evening.
