Dole to appear on ‘Tonight Show’

Former Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole will be a guest of Jay Leno tonight on NBC’s “The Tonight Show.” The show airs at 10:35 p.m. on Sunflower Broadband Channels 8 and 14.

Dole is promoting his new book, “One Soldier’s Story.” While in California this week on the promotional tour, Dole will be at the Nixon Library in Yorba Linda today and the Reagan Library in Simi Valley on Friday.

On Tuesday, Dole will speak at 4 p.m. at the Dole Institute of Politics at Kansas University, in the lecture series named for him. Dole will sign copies of his book after the lecture. The lecture also will be followed by a picnic outside the Dole Institute.

Drop-off site opens for brush disposal

The Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department has opened its brush drop-off site for area residents who need to dispose of tree limbs and other woody debris.

The site at 1420 E. 11th St. will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. every Saturday through Nov. 12. A $3 per-pick-up-load fee is charged to drop off the debris. No leaves will be accepted at the site.

Walk to raise funds for multiple sclerosis

The Eastern Kansas Branch of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society has organized an MS Walk for 10 a.m. Saturday at Burcham Park, Second and Indiana streets. Registration will begin at 9 a.m.

The event includes three- and six-mile routes with rest stops, snacks and encouragement from volunteers.

Meals program sets fund-raiser

Lawrence Meals on Wheels will hold its annual Spring Sampler fund-raiser from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on April 29 at First Baptist Church, 1300 Kasold Drive.

The event features homemade desserts, a quilt raffle and a silent auction with several items including an autographed Kansas University basketball.

Tickets are $10 per person and $15 a couple and can be purchased at the door or by calling 979-1440.
