Chance for severe weather this afternoon, tonight

Lawrence could be in for some severe weather today and tonight, including lightning, high winds and hail.

“There are some strong storms developing this afternoon,” said Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist.

Schack said Lawrence is in the “moderate risk” area for severe weather through 7 a.m. Friday, with the main threat being large hail, according to the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center.

At 8:30 a.m., Lawrence’s temperature was 65 degrees, with thick, gray clouds darkening the skies and a southeast 15-mph wind.

“We do have a lot of clouds out there this morning,” Schack said. The clouds will break up, allowing some sunshine into the area by early afternoon, she said.

“That will help redevelop thunderstorms later this afternoon,” Schack said.

Today’s high temperature is expected to reach 78 degrees, Schack said. The average high is 69 for this date.

Tonight the threat for thunderstorms continues, she said. Overnight the temperature will fall to 52 by early Friday morning.

There could be some lingering showers remaining Friday morning, along with cool temperatures, she said. Friday’s high temperature is expected to climb to only 58 degrees, she said

Saturday’s morning low will be 34, with Saturday’s afternoon high temperature reaching 59 degrees.
