Roommates return home to find man wearing their clothes

Two Lawrence women returned to their rental house Thursday and found a stranger standing by their front door, wearing one of the women’s pajama pants and T-shirt.

Jill Stutler and Anne Sobba, who both work at Eudora West Elementary School, drove home about 4:15 p.m. and discovered that the man had broken through a window and spent the afternoon “making himself at home,” Stutler said. He did not appear to have taken any possessions besides the clothes.

“He apparently took a bath or a shower in my bathroom,” Stutler said. “I guess he went through my drawers and closet and found something to wear. It looked like he had watched some TV and had some water and ate some M&Ms.”

When Stutler found the man, she asked him what he was doing. He responded that he was looking for someone named Jessica but must have had the wrong house. At that point, Sobba said, the man tried to leave and Stutler told him to stay where he was. He obliged.

“He just seemed kind of dazed by the whole thing,” Stutler said.

Sobba said she called 911 and stayed on the line with the operator for roughly 10 minutes before the police came and took the man into custody.

He remained in jail Friday evening.
