Contract knots
To the editor:
A recent letter writer suggested: “Our school district must work to eliminate any contract provision that doesn’t allow the district to fire a teacher that has been indicted.” While some of the local contract language could possibly deal with this issue, much of the problem rests with Kansas law.
Concerned citizens should discuss these issue with their legislators. This topic has been the subject of intense debate for years. School boards should have more flexibility when dealing with licensed teachers and their contracts, but much of the rope which ties their hands comes from Topeka, and the knots can only be cut through legislation, not locally negotiated contracts.
