Business owners hear water-line project plans

Ten Lawrence business owners and managers showed up Monday at City Hall for an informational meeting to learn more about a downtown water-line replacement project that is slated to begin next Monday.

The business people met with representatives from BG Consultants, the contracting company, and city hall staff.

“I felt a positive response about what we’re doing to make this happen smoothly,” said Maria Martin, director of Downtown Lawrence Inc., which represents downtown merchants.

The project is to replace some of the city’s oldest water lines along Massachusetts in three phases over the next three summers.

Contractors will be obliged to keep one lane of traffic open at all times during the work. They also will be penalized if they fall behind schedule, officials said.
