Tonganoxie resident killed in car crash

A Tonganoxie man was killed and a Salina woman was injured Saturday evening when their car ran off a Dickinson County highway and rolled down an embankment.

Bradley Wayne Nickel, 19, died in the crash, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol. Natosha L. Vansant, 21, who also was in the car, was injured and transported to Stormont-Vail Regional Medical Center, Topeka. Her condition wasn’t available Sunday.

The accident occurred on Kansas Highway 18, about 16 miles northeast of Abilene. It was reported at 6:35 p.m.

According to the patrol report, the victims were in a 1991 Honda Accord that was eastbound on K-18 when the car went onto the shoulder and crossed the intersection with Quail Road. The driver overcorrected, and the car rolled down an embankment.

The Highway Patrol was still investigating the accident Sunday, and it was not known who was driving. Neither of the victims was wearing a seat belt, the report said.

Melvern — One man is dead and another is in jail after a shooting early Sunday in Melvern, according to the Osage County Sheriff’s Office.

Also at the scene, officers arrested Jeffrey A. Garcia, 24 of Garnett. He was booked into jail on suspicion of second-degree murder, Dunn said. The case will be reviewed by the Osage County Attorney’s Office for filing of formal charges.

Officers are still investigating the incident, and no other details were available. Officers went to the residence about 2:30 a.m. after receiving a 911 call, Dunn said.

Meeting offered for licensing day cares

The Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department will have an informational meeting about registering and licensing family day-care homes.

The meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. today in Suite B of the health department, 200 Maine.

Kansas law requires some day-care providers who offer services at their homes to be registered. That includes day-care providers supervising two children for more than 20 hours a week or if they are taking care of three or more children.

No registration or licensing is required if care is being provided by a relative.

Contact the health department at 843-3060 for more information.
